The Down East Folk Arts Society was formed in 1993. Our purpose is to provide programs that foster and promote the enjoyment of traditional, multi-cultural, and contemporary folk music, dance and storytelling in Carteret and Craven Counties. The Society believes that through sharing our music, dance, and storytelling traditions, we encourage appreciation for all cultures, and enrich the quality of life in our communities. Down East Community Tour explore the communities of Down East North Carolina Photos & Local Information - Historic Beaufort, Morehead City and Down East Carteret County, NC by James Piver Beaufort Historic Site The Beaufort Historical Association is a private, non-profit organization that owns and operates the Beaufort Historic Site. It seeks to preserve and interpret the historic buildings and artifacts from Beaufort's past 300 years. Practice your arr's as you learn about Blackbeard the Pirate. He sailed the waters off our coast and his flag ship the QAR (Queen Annes Revenge) has been located in the waters off Beaufort. Visit the the The NC Maritime Museum to learn more. Cape Lookout National Seashore The seashore is a 56 mile long section of the Outer Banks of North Carolina running from Ocracoke Inlet on the northeast to Beaufort Inlet on the southeast. Here you can find Cape Lookout Lighthouse, Cape Lookout and Postsmouth Villages historic districs, nesting sea turtles and birds, wild horses The three undeveloped barrier islands which make up the seashore - North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks - may seem barren and isolated but they offer many natural and historical features that can make a visit very rewarding. The porch welcomes you to spend time with local carvers Thursday - Sunday and learn more about the hunting and fishing traditions of Down East. Harkers Island is located 17 miles east of Beaufort. Follow Highway 70 to the Harkers Island turnoff. Follow the Cape Lookout National Seashore signs to Harkers Island. The museum is on the left at the end of the island. Great view of the lighthouse across the street. Croatan Nation Forest The Croatan National Forest sits towards the southern end of the North Carolina coast. The coastal forest, saltwater estuaries, bogs, and raised swamps known as pocosin all contribute to an ecosystem that has more in common with the Everglades than North Carolina's mountainous forests to the west. With all its water, the Croatan makes for a fertile wildlife habitat — you'll find everything from wild turkey and osprey to black bears and 'gators. Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge, located in Carteret County, North Carolina is on the end of a peninsula marking the southern end of Pamlico Sound. Today the 14,480 acre refuge consists of approximately 11,000 acres of irregularly-flooded, brackish marsh and 3,480 acres of pocosin and woodland habitat. The dominant marsh plants include black needlerush, saltmarsh cordgrass, saltmeadow hay, and saltgrass. The woodland areas are dominated by loblolly pine, longleaf and pond pine. Live oak is also abundant on some upland sites. The marsh and surrounding waters provide wintering habitat for thousands of ducks and nesting habitat for colonial waterbirds. Fort Macon/Fort Macon State Park Fort Macon offers public access to the surf, sun and sand of the Crystal Coast—as well as a historic landmark. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, one of a series of barrier islands along the North Carolina coast, the park is surrounded on three sides by water—the Atlantic Ocean, Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Sound. This area of undisturbed natural beauty is the perfect place to explore salt marches and estuaries vital to the coastal ecosystem. The park is also home to a Civil War fort with a history as intricate and unique as the waterways of the sound. The History Place - 1008 Arendell Street in downtown Morehead City. This museum has exhibits and displays on Carteret Country history from the 1700's to the 1800's. Open 10am - 4pm Tueday - Saturday. Free parking and located within walking distance of the waterfront at Morehead. 252-247-7533 NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located five miles west of Atlantic Beach on Highway 58 in the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area. (They are closed untill 2006 for a major renovation) Rachel Carson Marine Estuarine Research Reserve on Carrot Island across Taylor’s Creek from the Beaufort waterfront is a complex of islands that compose the Rachel Carson site. The islands at the western end of the site – Carrot Island, Town Marsh, Bird Shoal, and Horse Island- are more than three miles long and less than a mile wide, covering 2,025 acres. Middle Marsh, separated from the rest of the site by the North River Channel, is almost two miles long and less than a mile wide, covering nearly 650 acres. Wild horses roam the islands and can often be seen from the Beaufort waterfront. Visit the wild horses of Shackleford Banks The NC Maritime Museum  Wood Ships, Old ships, Nautical History Located on the water front in downtown Beaufort the North Carolina Maritime Museum, an agency of the Office of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources, is driven by its mission to preserve and interpret all aspects of North Carolina's rich maritime heritage through educational exhibits, programs and field trips. Its organization includes administrative, education, maritime, and exhibits branches. Artifacts from Black Beard's ship Queen Anne's Revenge are on exhibit. Core Sound Kayaks & Touring Co.Tours, rental and lessons The purpose of the Crystal Coast Canoe & Kayak Club is to bring together people with a common interest in canoeing and kayaking to increase safety, skills, and enjoyment of the sport, and to encourage protection of our local waterways. Remember to: "Paddle Softly & Leave No Trace". The Birthplace of Pepsi Cola is in historic New Bern, North Carolina. Pepsi-Cola was first invented by Caleb Bradham in his pharmacy in 1898. The store is located in the original location where Bradham first invented Pepsi-Cola. The Birthplace of Pepsi is owned and operated by Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New Bern, Inc. and first opened its doors on the 100th Anniversary of Pepsi-Cola. Cherry Point Air Station. Home of the largest United States Marine Corps Air Station and the Second Marine Aircraft Wing. Did you know that Cherry Point is an alternate space Shuttle landing site. Tours are available. North Carolina's cruise lines aka NC Ferry System. Well, okay, maybe not a cruise line but they are fun to ride no matter what your age.
